Trump Admin Faces Lawsuit After Banning 3 Outlets
Donald Trump has banned CNN, Politico & MS NOW from covering the White House – a direct attack on press freedom in the United States. The president said in a social media post that the ban was due to “their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
Those 3 outlets responded by filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration on first amendment grounds. The 27-page filing argues that the president’s move violated the defendants’ due process rights and protections for newsgathering.
White House pool media (including Fox News) expressed solidarity with the banned organizations, saying in a joint statement: "No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting." Without pool coverage, a White House event yesterday could not be heard by anyone (video above).
Freedom of the press is essential for a well-functioning democracy and MAP joins the chorus of voices in calling for this unconstitutional ban to be lifted!
