Unifor and Media Action Plan condemn the killing of journalist Amal Khalil in Lebanon on April 22nd. According to the Associated Press, Khalil and her colleague Zeinab Faraj were travelling in southern Lebanon when an Israeli drone strike hit a vehicle in front of them. Khalil and Faraj took shelter in a nearby house, which was later hit by another airstrike. The report says Khalil was trapped under the rubble for at least 6 hours, as Israeli Defense Forces prevented paramedics from reaching her.
MAP and Unifor firmly believe journalists should never be targeted during military operations. Violence against media workers is a breach of international law -- Journalism is not a crime!
Khalil and Faraj had been covering the Israel-Lebanon conflict since March. Khalil had been reporting from Lebanon since 2006.
Courtney Bonneau, who is reportedly one of the only foreign journalists in Southern Lebanon, released a video describing the death of her colleague: "I can't believe I have to make another video to announce the death of a colleague and friend of mine... This was a blatant murder."
The Israeli government has now killed over 250 journalists in the Middle East since 2023. That number eclipses the total number of journalists killed in WW1, WW2, Vietnam & Afghanistan combined.
